About Roamwell

I’m Sami, the founder and travel advisor behind Roamwell! With a background and graduate degree in anthropology of tourism and 24 countries under my belt, I have spent just as much time learning about travel as I have actually traveling! In 2013, I did an archaeological dig in Rome and researched the impacts of tourism on archaeological conservation. Then in 2016, I did my graduate research in Guatemala, studying the impacts of volunteer tourism and tourism-based development in indigenous communities. Through those experiences, I learned about the impacts of tourism (both good and bad), how travel can be more beneficial for local communities and the environment, and how we as travelers can improve the industry from the inside.

Those experiences all led me here. I started Roamwell because I want to help travelers see the world in a sustainable, regenerative, and fulfilling way. When you choose Roamwell, you're not just a tourist – you are choosing to positively impact local communities and environments. By supporting locally-owned businesses, engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges, and contributing to a destination’s conservation efforts, you can leave the places you explore even better than you found them. Whether you're venturing into nature, discovering remote communities, or exploring major cities, planning with Roamwell offers you the chance to make a meaningful difference while creating unforgettable memories!

Regenerative Travel Agency of Change

You can rest assured that as an Agency of Change, Roamwell is committed to making your trip as regenerative, environmentally conscious, and culturally responsible as possible wherever you go.

Regeneration is moving beyond sustainability to create a net positive impact. Becoming an Agency of Change therefore requires meeting certain criteria based on demonstrating regenerative values like creating cultural guidelines for travelers, company contribution to at least one social or environmental external cause, choosing environmentally responsible accommodations, taking steps to reduce your carbon footprint, and more. Roamwell has been a member agency since April 2023 and actively participates in the Regenerative Travel community to learn more ways of promoting regenerative values through travel.

Climate Action Partnership with Tomorrow’s Air

In recognition of travel’s opportunity to help when it comes to our climate, Roamwell is joining Tomorrow’s Air, supporting climate action education and accelerating the development of carbon removal with permanent storage.

We learned that alongside conventional carbon offsetting and natural climate solutions, new carbon removal and storage approaches are also needed to help us clean up the trillion tons of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The reality is that even if all carbon dioxide emissions were to halt completely right now, Earth’s warming would continue due to the high levels of carbon dioxide already stored in the atmosphere. The only way to permanently reverse warming is through carbon removal.

Therefore, beginning in January 2023, Roamwell is incorporating a contribution to Tomorrow’s Air into the cost of every booking. Roamwell’s traveler contributions support:

  • Inspiring traveler education about meaningful climate action

  • An order for 14kgs carbon to be removed and permanently stored

The Tomorrow’s Air portfolio of carbon removal innovators includes pioneering companies selected for their technical and hybrid nature-tech solutions that can help restore our climate: direct air capture company Climeworks and Pacific Biochar. Traveler contributions through Roamwell support climate-conscious travel education and directly fund carbon removal provided by these companies.

Contributing Member of Mossy Earth

Mossy Earth plants the right trees in the right places and runs high-impact rewilding projects that help improve the overall health of the natural world. Roamwell’s membership supports projects that rebuild, protect and enhance key ecosystems and species that are underfunded, threatened or play a large role in climate change mitigation. It’s not only about the number of trees.

Planting trees to offset a particular amount of carbon doesn’t equate to carbon neutrality, negative nor zero, because it would take 50 - 100 years for these trees to sequester the carbon. As such, Mossy Earth emphasizes that by planting native trees in the right locations, they help you mitigate your carbon footprint, restore biodiversity, create wild areas, and fight climate change. And one of the many benefits of this is carbon sequestration.

Roamwell, as a monthly contributing member, is helping to make a genuine change and rewild the world. To see Roamwell’s impact so far, go to our profile and consider donating or becoming a member yourself!
